Your Assignment!

My sister, Heather, and I have read about 7 books in the past 3 weeks or so. We're quite enjoying this reading hobby we've resumed. So far, I've read:

Kite Runner: Loved it. Took a few minutes to get into, but I really thought it was a great book.

A Thousand Splendid Suns: Liked it even more than Kite Runner. This one made me cry. I recommend it to anyone who wants a little bit more than just a QUICK read, but it still only took me 2 1/2 days.

Fablehaven 2: These Fablehaven books are darling. I totally recommend them! They're a quick, enjoyable, happy read; but there is still some adventure. If you liked Harry Potter, but not as dark, these are really cute. I also would recommend them for any kids 8-9+

Life of Pi: As long as I skimmed over the LENGTHY religion part at the beginning, it was a good book. The end REALLY makes you think. In fact, it's still one of those books that I'm still thinking about weeks later!

A Girl Named Disaster: Eh. I read this directly after Life of Pi, so I felt like I spend A LOT of time at sea or on a boat.

5 Love Languages: Jason and I already have a great marriage, but I felt like REALLY understanding better his love languages has transformed our marriage for the better. I'm trying to be a better wife, and I see more clearly the wonderful things he does to show me love, as well. I'm so looking forward to reading the one for kids. It's fun for me to try to show Hazen love in ALL of the love languages each day so he will grow up without a doubt that his Mama loves him.

Stop Dressing Your 6 Year Old Like A Skank: Funny book compiled of essays about various topics. A fun read- If you don't have kids, don't bother, because I had a hard time relating at times because I only have a baby. Definitely good for Mom's with somewhat older kids.

Today, I'm going to the Library to pick up "The Candy Shop Wars", and "Night". One happy, and one holocaust depressing book. (Shhh...don't tell Heather, because I'm taking them both to San Diego without leaving her with anything....)

Your assignment is to add to my reading list! What books must I definitely read? Don't tell me "Pillars of the Earth", because I took it back after getting 15 pages into it. I'm sorry, but I don't have TIME to devote 975 pages to a book that isn't interesting immediately. I also took back "The Golden Compass" because it made me stop believing in God. Just kidding. I thought it was boring.

Let's hear 'em!

I'm glad you took Pillars of the Earth back. I'm embarrassed to admit that I finished it, but I did. There were quite a few very inappropriate "scenes" in it plus offensive language. I couldn't recommend it to anyone. I can tell you the clean version, if you're interested! :)

Hey, sorry another post from me. Anne, you should set up an account at goodreads.com if you don't already have one. You can put what books you've read, you are currently reading, and want to read. If you have an account, I'd love to see what you're reading! My e-mail is emilyshelton3@gmail.com

Read "The Time Travelers Wife", absolutely loved it and cried! Brad Pitt's company bought the rights to this book for a movie! Read it before they ruin it. One more Day till you come!!!!!! Oh, buy some baby sunscreen, I don't have babies anymore and I no longer have an infant car seat. Your brother threw it out!

Anne I helped edit the Fablehaven books and The Candy Shop Wars at Deseret Book! I am glad you like them; I also think they are really cute.

Anne you should start a book club and let me join! One of my all time favorite books is called In the Time of the Butterlies, by Julia Alvarez. I finished the Golden Compass and I was disappointed, it was kind of boring and i was looking forward to a lot of blasphemy, which i thought it sorely lacked for all the controversy it caused.

I've been reading Les Miserable but I'm not sure I'd recommend it, I've had to sit at the computer on a dictionary website so that I can look up about 30 words on each page that I have no idea what they mean. So it's basically taken me a month to read 150 pages I've got about 550 to go...lets do the math, that will take me 5 more months. Maybe I should give up and try some of the books you recommended. P.S. I really do try to limit the amount I "whip my boob out" in public...I'm not a very modest nurser.

Um I guess I can't really do math, that would really be 3.6 months not 5. I'm so glad I graduated college.

I'm not sure if this would be your cup of tea, but I've got two books in the mix right now. The first is Robert Alter's translation and commentary on the Book of Psalms. It's an incredible read from both a poetic and scholarly perspective. Also I'm getting to the end of Sam Harris' "Letter to a Christian Nation," which has sparked some amazing conversation between Ashley and I. It's definitely worth looking at!

I wish I would have checked your blog this morning! We could have talked about books at lunch! I guess we started to but go distracted by someone jumping on the tables & spilling pepper all over... Anyway, right now, I am reading a book by an LDS author, Betsy Brannon Green. It's a series that I have unfortunately read out of order, but really good. The first one is called Hearts in Hiding. They are suspenseful, but clean & have great characters.

I don't think I could read Kite Runner or A Thousand Splendid Suns. I have a hard time with books involving so much emotion. I am glad you liked it though, I have heard lots of good things about them both.

I am reading Angels & Demons next. I read DaVinci Code, saw most of the movie & now thought I would give this one a whirl.

My cousin is reading Eat, Pray, Love & really recommends it. The waiting list at the library is LONG in Salt Lake, so get your name down now. :)

P.S. Lunch was fun - I feel somewhat out of it & think I will take a nap while Polly is. Hazen is the cutest, matching socks or not! I am glad we got together before your trip, even if Polly was out of control...see why I was somewhat worried about her being all over the place? I was so happy to see Hazen & be reminded what sweet babies are like. :) Have a super trip, call me when you get back or I will just facebook harass you & Jason to come over!

I recommend the following, as long as you don't hold me accountable for any inappropriate content (I think they're great).

My Name is Asher Lev--Chaim Potok
Invisible Man--Ralph Ellison
Goose Girl--Shannon Hale
Crossing to Safety--Stegner
East of Eden--Steinbeck
The Glass Castle--Jeanette Walls
The Blue Sword & The Hero and the Crown--both by Robin McKinley

Okay, I'll stop now. But there are lots more where those came from. And I'm excited to read some of the ones you recommended! Yay! New books to read...

I actually really liked the Golden Compass. Can't seem to convince Josh to see the movie though. I work for a book fair company so most of the books I read are for ages 8-14. The Shannon Hale books are really popular:
*Book of a Thousand Days
*Goose Girl
*Princess Academy
I loved:
*P.S. I love you
*The Memory Keepers Daughter
*The Davinci Code
*Secret Life of Bees
*The Shopoholic Series
I agree that you should start a book club blog. Or a real book club and invite me to join when I get to Utah.

The best book i've ever read is Harry Potter. I'm a Potter FREAK. SO i would have to recommend that, but i'm sure you've already read them. If so, another one of my favorites that i've almost finished is "Not My Will But Thine" by Neal A. Maxwell. Sooo Good. :)

I liked Pillars of the Earth, despite the inappropriate content. I couldn't put it down. A really great book is A Girl Named Zippy. Hilarious! Loved it. When you start reading to Hazen you have to read Kate DiCamillo books. Preferably The Tale of Despereaux and The Incredible Journey of Edward Tulane. If you join goodreads, I'd love to be your friend. I have the rest of my favorites listed there. My email is w_vonsosen@yahoo.com.
